The Heliograph
About The Heliograph
A Bit of History
The Heliograph, created by Tony Adams in 1981, came into being to support the relatively new and very popular rules set The Sword and The Flame
(TSATF) as well as to advance colonial wargaming in general.  Each issue contained information on colonial-figure availability, TSATF clarifications,
OBs, uniform guides, scenarios, battle and campaign descriptions, hobby news and reviews.

Milton Soong, who was later to accept editorship of Savage and Soldier magazine from Lynn Bodin, took over with Issue 41 and continued the grand
tradition started by Tony.  January of 1990 saw a new editor, Andrew Preziosi, take over with Issue 60.  In June 1995 (Issue 86) Richard Brooks
continued Tony’s efforts, regularizing publication with Issue 98 to six per year and expanding The Heliograph from ten pages an issue to an average of
26 pages by adding more articles, reviews, and colonial hobby news.  In October 2001 the first
“Guide to Colonial Manufacturers” was published in The
Heliograph and became an annual item.  February 2007 saw a change with
Darryl Smith taking over as editor.
Today
The Heliograph continues to be a mainstay on the historical miniatures gaming scene.  Published consistently six times per year, the focus has
expanded to cover all colonial gaming topics and rules.  And keep in mind, The Heliograph is the
only magazine currently published that is dedicated to
colonial gaming.

About the Editor - Darryl Smith
As I now have the honor as serving as editor and website administrator, I thought a short history about my gaming life might be in order.  I started
gaming when I was ten, an order cousin had several Avalon Hill boardgames and Richtofen's War was my favorite.  After several years as an avid
historical boardgamer, I became hooked on miniatures in college when I saw a World War III microarmor game hosted by two of my (now) good friends
going on.  I became heavily interested in microarmor (both moderns and World War II), then forayed into Napoleonics.  Too many rules later, I primarily
focus on oddball colonial periods, as well as American frontier subjects.

I served several years as president and board member for HMGS Great Lakes, where I also helped organize and run conventions.  I have also written
articles for the HMGS Great Lakes newsletter and MWAN.

I hope that I can simply add to The Heliograph's already excellent quality by helping to keep the newsletter as friendly and as informative as possible.  I
look forward to hearing more about the subscribers and what projects they are working on.
